ADELAIDE

Adelaide

Founded in 1836 and named after Queen Adelaide, wife of King William 1V, this beautiful city has a charm and style of its own. Captain Collett Barker explored this attractive city in 1831. It was actually, Colonel William Light who surveyed the area in 1832 and laid out the plan of Adelaide, 10klm inland from its port.

The University of Adelaide, opened in 1882 admitted women as well as men from its initiation. Adelaide was a leader in the field of structured institutions. This city has been the first major Australian settlement to have a telegraph link with London.

It can be covered in an hour or two by casual walks. The striking feature of this delightful city is the lively blend of culture, modern city self assurance, large country town ease, social flair and understated elegance. Adelaide has a moderate Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and short, mild winters.

Adelaide is an abode to attractive and wide streets, extensive parklands. Many fine Victorian and Edwardian buildings can also be seen here. Adelaide has been a mark for exquisite examples of colonial religious architecture. Some of these though, have been converted in recent years to restaurants and nightclubs. Adelaide houses the main shopping centre, which is Australia's most successful mall. The mall projects a carnival atmosphere daily.
