New South Wales is in the south-east part of the Australian continent and is the most popular and heavily industrialized State in Australia, with a highly urbanized population. The total area of the State is 802 000 kms. Rainfall varies widely over the state, gradually diminishing to an annual average of 180 mm in the far north-west.
New South Wales generates more than 35 per cent of Australia's goods and services and sends more than 60 per cent of its exports to Asia, attracting more than a third of all foreign investment into the country. The state boasts of a variety of minerals like coal, lead, zinc and mineral sands (rutile and zircon) from the beach areas of the central and north coast. The state's chief manufactures include machinery, electrical goods, basic metal products, chemicals and fertilizers, processed food and beverages.
