Townsville
Townsville is the largest of the northern tropical cities and situated at a distance of 1000 kms to the north of Brisbane and 370 kms to the south of Cairns. It is bounded by Mission Beach to the north, Charters Towers to the west and Bowen in the south. Cardwell and Mission Beach boast of rainforests, waterfalls, spectacular beaches and the sheltered waterways of the Hinchinbrook Channel. Bowen completes the southern boundary of this region which also features superb reefs, beaches and excellent fishing spots.
Established in 1864, it was built up for the development of the cattle industry. The place houses a number of ancient interesting buildings of graceful elegance. This place is an important sugar and rice growing area and copper refining is also a local Industry. 74 coral reef islands off the coast, adorn this place. The largest of the coral fringed islands is Magnetic Island (50 sq km) only 30 minutes by ferry. Access to Hinchinbrook, Orpheus and Bedarra is also easy. These islands are some of the better known resort islands.
The Billabong sanctuary, nearby, is a large wildlife park that plays abode to many encaged animals such as kangaroos and beautiful tropical wild birds. Crocodiles and snakes are also a part of the attraction. Day cruises and diving expeditions to the Great Barrier Reef, and white water rafting excursions depart regularly from the city.
