  • Cambodia is the successor state of the once powerful Khmer Empire, which ruled most of the Indochinese Peninsula between the 11th and 14th centuries.
  • During the colonial period, Cambodia was a protectorate of France from 1863 to 1953.
  • Overall, the cuisine of Cambodia is similar to that of its Southeast Asian neighbours.
  • Cambodia is bordered by Laos on the north, by Vietnam on the east, by the Gulf of Thailand on the south, and by Thailand on the west and north.
  • Cambodia is one of the worlds poorest nations, its economy and its political life still suffering from the civil war that racked the country during the latter part of the 20th cent.
  • Under the constitution promulgated in 1993 and subsequently amended, Cambodia is a constitutional monarchy headed by a king; the king is chosen by the Royal Council of the Throne from the members of the royal family.
  • Politics of Cambodia takes according to the nation's constitution (enacted in 1993) formally place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic monarchy, whereby the Prime Minister of Cambodia is the head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system.

  • It has been suggested that Cambodia's ability to peacefully appoint a new King shows that Cambodia's government has stabilized incredibly from the situation the country was in during the 1970's (see History of Cambodia).
  • Cambodia is administered by the Royal Government of Cambodia after an internationally supervised election in 1993.
