Greater Accra Region
The Greater Accra Region is one of the most exciting and distinctive regions in Ghana. Although the smallest region, it is the most densely populated, containing the two great metropolitan areas of Accra and Tema, which are the country's major commercial and industrial centers respectively.
The City of Accra has been Ghana's capital since 1877 when the seat of the British colonial administration was transferred from Cape Coast to Accra. It contains fine public buildings reflecting its transition from a 19th century Victorian suburb (it was called Victoria Borg) to a modern metropolis. Ghana's international airport - Kotoka International Airport, is located within the metropolis about 12km from the centre of the city.
The city spreads along the Atlantic coast, has most of the best luxury hotels, excellent restaurants and nightclubs, and has some of the exciting beaches found along the coast of the country. The city contains a number of public buildings and museums including the national museum, public monuments, modern business facilities and a bustling commercial area, as well some of the finest residential suburbs in the country.
Tema, on the other hand, is a new town some 30km east of the city of Accra. It was built in the early 1960's as an industrial and commercial city with Ghana's foremost commercial port and a large fishing harbor and other modern facilities. It is also home to some of the finest hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants you can find.
The two most famous beaches and most popular with visitors and Ghanaians alike are Labadi Pleasure Beach and the Kokrobite Beach. Labadi beach is about 10 minutes drive to the east of the Accra whiles Kokrobite is about 25km to the west of Accra. Kokrobite also has a school for learning indigenous Ghanaian music and culture.
Further along to the east of the region is Ada with the estuary of the Volta River. Ada has one of the finest beach resorts in the country with very modern hotel and restaurant facility swimming pool and palm groves. You can have some water sports and take river trips to the island spots located in the river, meet the people who live on them and enjoy some good Ghanaian fish soup.
A guided tour of the region can be arranged with some of the tour agencies located in the city to see some of its interesting attractions. You can also make your own trips around on the tro-tro or taxi.
