PEOPLE AND RELIGION

Ghana People

"You are most welcome!" This is what you first hear whenever the visitor goes to Ghana. It is an infectious hearty greeting and in two of the most common Ghanaian languages Twi and Ewe "welcome" is "akwaaba" and "woezor," respectively.

Ghana is probably the friendliest of all African countries. Its warmth is infectious…some people compare its hospitality to the cheery, open order as that of Denmark. The friendliness of the people in Ghana enfolds a sophisticated awareness of who they are and who you are. There are no color prejudices whatsoever - a rare pleasure in today's world. Ghanaians prefer to have their guest stay with them and are deeply disappointed when friends chose to stay in a hotel instead of moving in as guests whilst in Ghana. You may want to enjoy this rare opportunity of being a "family member".

Getting to know people is easy in Ghana. Along with the "welcome" is an implicit "Come and join us". It is the Ghanaian way of life. It suffers no generation gap, sets no criterion for joining in - good dancers, poor dancers, children, ancients…no one notices, and no one cares.

The Ghanaian Highlife, and indigenous social dance, has a do-your-own thing beat that compels you to move rhythmically. Once you've captured it, there is rollicking, dancing and good times all through your visit. The dancing spirit hits with middle-American tent-revival fervor, and the pervasive rhythms, musical lilt and camaraderie release all sorts of wonderful self-expression.

Religion
The principal ethnic groups are Akan (Twi- and Fanti-speaking), Ewe, the Guans, Gas, Gonjas, Walas, Frafras and Dagomba. The major languages are Twi, Fanti, Ewe, Ga, Hausa, Nzema and Dagbani. The official language of the country is however English. There is complete freedom of worship in Ghana. The Christians make up 43% of the total population with 38% traditionalist and 12% Moslems.
