Shopping in Ghana Local craft items to look for include stone and wood carvings, sisal baskets, beadwork, ebony carvings, unique jewelry (especially with typical Ghanaian motifs), tie-dyed and silk-screened fabrics, and pretty woven cloth(like the kente and adinkra) and clothing. Do bargain, because even in some established shops, most traders are willing to offer some amount of reduction or discount.
There are markets in every neighborhood. The best is Makola Market in the heart of the city of Accra. It has recently been remodeled into a modern facility with a variety of shops and you can find all kinds of beautiful Ghana-made textiles here. There is the Agbogbloshie market a major outlet for fresh fruits and vegetables and also the Osu Night market famous for its smoked tilapia fish and kenkey (a typical Ghanaian delight). Along the Cantonments Road-Osu is a row of shops and banking services. This area is referred to as the Oxford Street of Accra (similar to that in London). There is also the crafts market located at the Arts Centre on the High Street, Accra, where you can find beautiful handcrafted goods- wood, brass, cane craft, textiles and many more. Do bargain hard since you might find many people trying to sell you the same kind of stuff.
Across the country you will find large markets at each regional capital. You will like to visit the Kejetia market in Kumasi - it has a good beads section were you can make rare collections if you are interested in beads. The Tamale and Bolga markets in the northern half of the country are places where you will find leather goods and sisal/reed basket, and good quality popular Ghanaian smocks. Other markets that might interest you are Agomeda market in the Dangbe West district, famous for beads and the Agbozume market in southern Volta Region where you will find wonderful hand woven textiles. Try to go there on what is termed their 'market days'. These are days when people from all over the neighboring towns and villages bring their wares to sell. You'll also find traders from across the country coming to buy. You might find things cheaper during this time.
