Hunted Facts on liberia
  • Liberia, officially the Republic of Liberia, is a country on the west coast of Africa, bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Côte d'Ivoire.
  • The history of Liberia as a political entity begins with the arrival of the fl American settlers — the Americo-Liberians, as they came to be known, to Africa — who established a colony of “free men of color” on its shore in 1822 under the auspices of the American Colonization Society.
  • Liberia's government is based on the American model of a republic with three equal branches of government, though in reality the President of Liberia has usually been the dominant force in Liberian politics.
  • It is at the southern extremity of Liberia, Cape Paimnas, that the West African coast from Morocco to the southernmost extremity of Guinea turns somewhat abruptly eastwards and northwards and faces the Gulf of Guinea.
  • The extreme north of Liberia is still for the most part a very well-watered country, covered with a rich vegetation, but there are said to be a few breaks that are rather stony and that have a very well-marked dry season in which the vegetation is a good deal burnt up.
  • The region of dense forest, however, does not cover the whole of Liberia; the Makona river and the northern tributaries of the Lofa and St Pauls flow through a mountainous country covered with grass and thinly scattered trees, while the ravines and watercourses are still richly forested.
  • Politics of Liberia takes place in a framework of a presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the President is the head of state and head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system.
  • Liberia is still in transition from dictatorship and civil war to democracy.
  • From 1980 to 2003, Liberia was governed by a series of military and transitional governments.
  • Many impressive buildings were built, along with the old University of Liberia (opened in 1862, university status in 1951), and a secondary school system, hospitals etc. However, the infrastructure has been largely destroyed by the fighting in recent years.
